As previously observed with the emergence of technology in education, the introduction of AI will necessitate educators to innovate pedagogically by drawing inspiration from active learning methods in authentic situations. However, the challenge with these approaches lies in addressing the affective and volitional aspects crucial for cognitive engagement. These aspects delve into the learner's personality, the learning activity as an embodied experience, the meaning of learning, motivation (in terms of commitment and persistence), and sometimes a spiritual dimension (awe, inspiration, values, etc.).
The key questions here are how will we save some key skills such as human sensitivity, care for mother nature and for each other, and basic skills like communication with the on-going surge of AI and use of technology as a constant mediator between the real world and the perceived world. Moreover, these competencies and skills involve reflecting on these experiences to enhance metacognition and enrich the learning experience in all dimensions. Columbia University’s task force will help to theoretically explore these key dimensions to create conditions for active learning but, more importantly, to conceive learning experiences that are "humanly augmented," integrating the use of AI.
