Youth Impact will discuss how interventions that use low- and middle- tech platforms could represent a promising set of options to provide remote, flexible educational support to students. These tools are widespread and do not require internet connection or expensive hardware. Studies conducted on phone tutoring in five countries showed improvements in learning by 0.35 SDs (Angrist et al., 2023a). The presentation will review evidence behind phone-based tutoring approaches, best practices for delivery, and will share several examples of how phone tutoring is being scaled in several contexts. The presentation will conclude with a broader set of lessons that can inform similar initiatives that rely on basic technology to deliver education support.
