This presentation will introduce one INGO’s global model for accelerated and nonformal education catch-up programs. Specifically, what are the trends we are seeing across a 10-country initiative in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia regarding who is dropping out, and what transition pathways these learners choose after building their foundational learning. Unique to this model is 1) the inclusion of leadership and life skills as a parallel pathway to learning, in recognition that building literacy and numeracy, and success in formal learning pathways, is statistically predicted by increased Social and Emotional Learning development- specifically increases in self-perceptions of their own literacy; 2) the inclusion of financial literacy and identifying applied math opportunities for learners to practice through the use of savings groups and individual or group income generating activities (IGAs); 3) the inclusion of adolescent sexual and reproductive health as a key learning topic and opportunity to practice life skills such as negotiation and decision making; 4) the use of digital technologies in the learning environment and as part of the monitoring process for fidelity and quality assessments; 5) the inclusion of parents and community members to ensure safe learning environments, their support of learners’ participation in these classes and in their chosen transition pathway; 6) close collaboration with Ministries of Education to ensure these efforts contribute to education sector strategies; and 7) a specific focus on gender- ensuring that the barriers to learning and participation that affect girls and boys are both known and addressed to the best of our abilities. This presentation will explore the extent to which digital technologies and the use of digital tools is mainstreamed in this work and recommendations for next steps through pilot and national stages.
