This presentation will highlight the process one NGO in Malawi took to develop an alternate accelerated catch-up model, working closely with the national Complementary Basic Education (CBE) unit of the Ministry of Education (MoE). Specifically, we will share the process for developing an expanded curriculum, alternate model, and how we have used evidence from 8+ years of partnership with the MoE to inform a new set of national guidelines for the CBE program run by the MoE. This will include considerations regarding transition pathways and needs of different sub-age groups of learners. Piloting work to build digital literacy in the accelerated learning classrooms via the use of complementary literacy and numeracy learning apps, student and teachers/facilitator response will be discussed, along with the results. Nuances regarding what is required for uptake, feedback and use of a digitized curriculum, and how this all fits into the national MoE plans, budgets, and strategies for future CBE classes will be discussed. Finally, recommendations regarding future integration of technology will be shared with other practitioners.
