Online Pathways to Hope Learner Agency and Matriculation Success in Eastern Cape Schools

Wed, March 26, 1:15 to 2:30pm, Palmer House, Floor: 3rd Floor, Salon 4

Proposal

The Eastern Cape province in South Africa carries a legacy of educational inequities rooted in apartheid. The transition to online learning, although it presents opportunities, also risks exacerbating existing disparities if not approached through a lens of social justice. In this presentation, I will present a study that examines how secondary school teachers in the Eastern Cape (BEd Hons students and others) are adopting and using learner agency within online learning environments to support Grade 12 learners preparing for their matriculation exams while striving for racially just outcomes. It draws inspiration from the vision of hopeful, racially just online learning position. I will share the full abstract tomorrow evening. I am running some qualitative data analysis on NVivo the data we collected from 2022 to 2024.
