Privatization and marketization have become increasingly intricate and multifaceted phenomena in education. Today, these processes encompass a range of emerging policies and developments that have significantly transformed the policy frameworks established decades ago. Despite their centrality in education policy research over the past several decades, the conceptual and analytical tools used to study privatization and marketization often struggle to keep pace with their evolving complexity.
To effectively engage with this growing diversity, it is essential to revisit and refine the conceptual, analytical, and methodological frameworks that underpin research on education privatization and marketization.
The Research Handbook on Education Privatization, edited by Adrián Zancajo, Clara Fontdevila, Huriya K. Jabbar, and Antoni Verger, seeks to capture the latest trends in privatization and marketization within school systems. It examines how these phenomena are unfolding in new contexts, offering fresh approaches for analyzing them. This volume places particular emphasis on updating the definitions of education privatization and marketization in light of recent developments, synthesizing key research gaps and analytical limitations in the field, and proposing innovative directions for future research.
