Group Submission Type: Workshop
▪ Purposes: The facilitators will use this workshop to bring together a diverse group of scholars to contribute to an edited volume (or special issue) related to using mixed methods in comparative and international education (CIE) research. Through this effort, the workshop organizers aim to expand the methodological discussions of doing mixed methods research (MMR) in CIE through the use of critical and reflexive approaches to research. The resulting publication will be different from most methodological texts on MMR in that it will not be a survey of mixed methods research designs and paradigms. Rather, chapter authors will engage reflexively and critically about key issues when doing MMR studies in the field. The workshop will provide the facilitators and participants the time and space to share drafts of their work, exchange constructive feedback, and plan for the completion and submission of their drafts for review and publication. The workshops’ broader goals include: (1) to create a dialogue among researchers using mixed methods in the field; (2) to support the use of mixed methods among students and early career researchers, as well as among research teams; and (3) to develop a network of researchers doing critical and reflexive mixed methods research to advance the field of CIE.
▪ Learning Objectives: (1) To exchange ideas related to how individuals and teams have used pluralist epistemological/methodological approaches to challenge common assumptions and practices for knowledge production: (2) To increase awareness and appreciation of how MMR research can be more reflexive and dialogical; (3) To receive and give specific, directed feedback on previously submitted written work; (4) To create a plan for revising manuscripts for submission to an edited volume.
▪ Delivery Plan: This will be an invited workshop. We will send out a call for proposals in early fall 2024. From the submitted proposals, we will select 12-15 authors to submit manuscripts and participate in the workshop. We will ask participants to complete and submit draft manuscripts to us by March 15th, 2025. During the workshop, we will engage participants in the following way:
1. Brief discussion of reflexivity in MMR;
2. Overview/presentation of chapter contributions, themes, and MMR reflections;
3. Small-group discussion of chapter feedback between workshop facilitators and authors;
4. Whole-group facilitated discussion of chapter differences, complementarities, and possible grouping of manuscripts in edited volume;
5. Whole-group planning of submission, review, and publication of complete drafts.
