Group Submission Type: Workshop
This workshop is designed for international scholars, particularly from the Global South, who are interested in publishing their work in peer-reviewed journals like Teachers College Record (TCR). Continuously published since 1900 by Teachers College, Columbia University, TCR welcomes empirical, critical, methodological, and theoretical disciplinary and interdisciplinary scholarship that emphasizes the intersections between education research and other fields, raises new questions, and develops innovative approaches to our understandings of pressing issues. TCR invites research from international scholars who illuminate productive counterpoints to the mainstream U.S. experience and provide new ways of thinking, seeing, and being in conversation with each other about the past, present, and future.
The Editorial Team at TCR is committed to promoting diverse scholarly voices, making them heard, and thus increasing their impact. In the spirit of this commitment, we conducted a systematic analysis of manuscripts accepted for publication in TCR between 2015 and 2020. By examining author demographics, article characteristics, and other metrics, we assessed whether we are meeting our editorial goals of providing a platform for diverse voices in educational scholarship. Of over 1,200 authors who contributed to 469 full-length articles, 91.1% were based in the U.S. This workshop aims to encourage international scholars to submit their manuscripts to TCR.
The workshop will be divided into three parts:
Part 1: Understanding the Manuscript Structure
We will cover the key elements of a research manuscript—title, abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, conclusion, and references. Participants will learn about helpful resources (e.g., books, articles, websites) to support their writing and publishing process. Participants will leave this section with a clear understanding of how to structure their manuscript to meet the expectations of peer-reviewed journals like TCR.
Part 2: Navigating the Peer-Review Process
This section will provide insights into the peer-review process, focusing on TCR’s specific review criteria and timeline. We will discuss the criteria reviewers typically use to assess manuscripts, such as originality, clarity, methodological rigor, theoretical contributions, and relevance to the field. We will also highlight common pitfalls that lead to rejection, helping participants avoid these mistakes. This section will offer practical advice on how to respond to reviewer feedback—whether it’s accepting, revising, or rebutting—and how to craft a strong response letter that respectfully addresses reviewer concerns while defending the integrity of the research. We will use examples of feedback from reviewers and editors, as well as discuss TCR’s editorial policies and procedures.
Part 3: Small Group Discussions and Manuscript Strategies
The final portion of the workshop will be highly interactive, allowing participants to apply what they’ve learned and receive feedback on their specific questions or concerns about publishing. The small group format will encourage participants to engage with peers, share ideas, and leave the workshop with actionable steps for completing and submitting their work. By the end of this section, participants will have clearer strategies for preparing their manuscripts and more confidence in navigating the submission process.
The workshop aims to provide participants with practical knowledge, actionable strategies, and the confidence to publish their work in peer-reviewed journals like TCR. We hope this session will inspire international scholars to share their diverse perspectives with the academic community and amplify their contributions on a global stage.
