According to the American Psychological Association report 2023, the recruitment, promotion, tenure, and retention of faculty of color is a longstanding problem in institutions of higher learning in the United States. According to 2020 U.S. Census data, the U.S. population has become increasingly racially and ethnically diverse. Data indicate that more than 40% of the U.S. population now consists of people of color. But in the fall 2021, only 24.6% of tenure-track faculty across faculty ranks consisted of self-identified faculty of color. There are many challenges that faculty of color face in academia in terms of not feeling included, research not acknowledged by their colleagues, too much service, and biased review for tenure and promotion. Faculty of color also leave academia in frustration. In this panel we will discuss some of the issues that faculty of color have experienced in their own universities.
This session will also highlight the stories of faculty members who successfully published articles and used this digital age as an opportunity to climb up the ladder in their tenure journey. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in dialogue and learn tips on how to network with scholars around the world, widen the scope of research and smoothly navigate the tenure journey.
