The Language Learning from Familiar to Formal (L2F2) methodology highlights the importance of learner-centered teaching that draws upon children’s prior knowledge and experience of their own languages. When programs are developed thoughtfully, consideration of cultural nuances and other social factors become the cornerstone of implementation. Such is the case of the L2F2 methodology, a bilingual approach that builds bridges between the home language and the languages of teaching and learning. It is implemented through both direct and indirect pathways. In the direct model, L2F2-trained instructors directly implement the approach with learners in classrooms, ensuring fidelity to the methodology. In the indirect model, a cascade approach is used, where L2F2 Master Trainers train government trainers, who then train and supervise government teachers implementing L2F2 practices in schools. This dual pathway balances quality with scalability, while embedding capacity within existing education systems.
In rural Kenya, where many children enter school with limited proficiency in the language of instruction, the L2F2 methodology is implemented as a direct model by experienced instructors. The approach has been instrumental in addressing the challenges of multilingual education. By initially teaching in a familiar language, teachers can build foundational literacy skills before transitioning to formal language and curriculum structures. The bilingual aspect of the L2F2 methodology emphasises the importance of linguistic diversity and cultural inclusion. As children learn in their mother tongue, they develop a strong sense of identity and community, which are essential components of building their confidence and participation in the learning process. This approach is crucial in promoting equal opportunity for learners that are often marginalised and disadvantaged.
This presentation will highlight the successful implementation of the L2F2 methodology in Kitui, Kenya. It will also provide details on the adaptation process and reflect on the challenges experienced as well as the lessons learnt.
