Exploring the Effective Interactions for Synchronous Online Classes

Sun, November 19, 8:00 to 9:30am, Atlanta Marriott Marquis, Floor: Marquis Level, M302

Abstract

Synchronous online classes allow students to interact with the instructor and their classmates remotely in real time. The opportunity of in-person interactions has been frequently cited as an advantage of face-to-face offerings over the online ones. Therefore, the effectiveness of these online interactions determines the extent that the online offerings will generate comparable learning experience and outcomes. This study explores (1) the online interactive practices from the literature, (2) the effectiveness of these practices for different student groups in different learning contexts, and (3) the factors that could help enhance students’ interactions in a synchronous online learning environment.
