Trucking deregulation and CO2 emissions: Supply chain management and public policy lessons learned from Europe

Sat, November 22, 1:00 to 2:30pm, Orlando World Center Marriott, Miami

Abstract

This research investigates the impact of EU trucking deregulation on supply chain environmental sustainability. Using a mixed-method approach, qualitative interviews and quantitative scenario analysis with a Swedish retailer, we find that deregulation paradoxically decreased sustainability. Contrary to the EU's intention to improve technical efficiency, our study reveals negative environmental consequences. We contribute to public policy and operations/supply chain management literature by detailing how well-intentioned policies can fail due to a lack of supply chain thinking. Our findings offer a holistic view of deregulation's effect on network costs and highlight supply chain values policymakers must consider.
