Research on organised crime and law enforcement agencies has found that technology has facilitated existing crimes such as human trafficking, the illegal drug trade and money laundering. The same holds true for vehicle theft, as demonstrated in the V-BAR research in six EU Member States. This presentation serves to identify technological facilitators and addresses the situational crime prevention measures that could be developed to prevent vehicle theft and the stolen vehicle trade. It builds on the European Barrier model created in the context of the V-BAR project and will inform practitioners and scholars on the benefits and disadvantages of crime scripting as a situational crime prevention instrument.
