Abstract: Prior research explored how women’s socio-economic status influence their intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization. However, less is known about the mechanism of it. We examined patriarchal ideology, which is deeply embedded in Chinese culture, to see if and how it may have a mediating effect. The current study used structural equation modeling to analyze self-reported data from 600 adult women in China. Results indicated that women who have lower socio-economic status are more likely to endorse patriarchal ideology and justify the use of IPV, which then are more likely to experience victimization of IPV. These findings suggest that patriarchal ideology plays a distinct role in the relationship between women's socio-economic status and IPV victimization, highlighting the potential for to mitigate women’s IPV victimization through prevention and intervention focusing on women’s patriarchal ideology.
