Young career makers in drug-related organised crime in the Netherlands

Thu, September 12, 4:00 to 5:15pm, Faculty of Law, University of Bucharest, Floor: 2nd floor, Room 3.06

Abstract

For many years, the Netherlands has been an important hub in the transnational drug market. Our study focuses on young offenders involved in drug-related organised crime in the Netherlands. Juvenile crime in general has been declining in the Netherlands over the last decade, but there are concerns about the involvement of youngsters in drug-related crime and the fact that they may end up in important positions in drug-related organised crime. Although some (qualitative) research has been carried out, little is known about the size and nature of this group and the extent to which they develop more serious criminal careers.
Based on a data set of all young drug-related organised crime suspects (18-23 years) from police investigative files in the timeframe 2019-2023, we have gained insight in the main characteristics and criminal records of these young suspects, the role they have played within drug-related organised crime, and to what extent their roles have evolved over time. A better understanding of this group of young 'career makers' contributes to the development of prevention and intervention strategies.

Researchers of the National Police of the Netherlands are currently working on the National Strategic Assessment of Drug-Related Serious and Organised Crime in the Netherlands 2024. The aim of this report is to provide an overview regarding the scope and nature of drug-related organised crime in the Netherlands and the criminal networks and subjects involved. The study of young career makers in drug-related organised crime in the Netherlands is part of this research-project.
