P049 - "I'd have smashed his head with the pool cue" How Thinking Skills Programmes Impact Self-Regulation

Thu, September 12, 6:45 to 8:00pm, Faculty of Law, University of Bucharest, Front Courtyard

Abstract

Cognitive skills programs are cognitive-behavioural programs designed to help offenders solve problems and make personal decisions more effectively by helping offenders learn how, rather than what, to think (Travers et al, 2014). The targets of cognitive skills programs are generally impulse control, emotional regulation, anti-social cognition, consequential thinking, and social problem-solving skills (Travers et al, 2014; Papalia, 2020).
This paper will highlight the results of a large-scale qualitative study (n=51) investigating the impact of the Thinking Skills Programme' on prisoners. The poster will showcase themes on reconstruing relationships, development of self and emotional regulation and the importance of compassionate and 'authentic' therapists.
