Routledge Handbook on European Penology – II. European Penality – Developments in Penal Practices

Fri, September 13, 2:00 to 3:15pm, Faculty of Law, University of Bucharest, Floor: Ground floor, Room 1.18

Session Submission Type: Pre-arranged Panel

Abstract

This Routledge Handbook, which is currently being prepared, aims at offering an overview of the current state of the art and of cutting-edge penological research in Europe, covering all the regions in Europe, and including research that may hitherto not have been published in English.
In this second panel, we discuss some common developments in penal practices across Europe, such as the increased use of information technology in prison and probation systems; the impact of old age and gender on penal policies; the resort to many invisible, collateral forms of punishments; and the paradoxical meanings of ‘community’ in community sanctions and measures.
