Artificial Intelligence and Adolescent Relationship Dynamics: A Comprehensive Multimodel Analysis of Digital Violence Responses

Fri, September 5, 3:30 to 4:45pm, Communications Building (CN), CN 3105

Abstract

This pioneering study explores the intricate capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) systems in navigating complex adolescent relationship scenarios involving emotional, physical, sexual, and digital violence. Utilizing a mixed-methods thematic analysis across four prominent AI models—ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Llama—the research systematically deconstructs how technological systems conceptualize, interpret, and respond to nuanced instances of interpersonal violence and consent violations.
Through a rigorous examination of five meticulously designed hypothetical vignettes depicting dating violence, we unveil significant variations in emotional intelligence, practical guidance, and ethical reasoning among AI models. Our findings reveal profound divergences in response strategies: ChatGPT and Claude demonstrate remarkable emotional validation capabilities, Gemini emphasizes legal implications and immediate interventions, while Llama provides analytical, detached perspectives on relational dynamics.
The study critically examines the models' approaches to fundamental concepts such as consent, coercion, and personal boundaries, exposing intricate challenges in developing technologically mediated support systems for vulnerable populations. By integrating theoretical frameworks including Relational Ethics Theory, Communication Privacy Management Theory, and Attachment Theory, we provide a comprehensive lens for understanding AI's potential and limitations in addressing sensitive interpersonal challenges.
Our research presents transformative insights for AI developers, educational institutions, and policymakers, highlighting the urgent need for more concise trauma-informed digital interventions. The findings underscore both the promise and the complexity of leveraging artificial intelligence as a supportive mechanism for adolescents navigating increasingly complex relational landscapes in the digital age.
