The Role of Online Gaming in Predicting Cyberdeviant Behaviours: A Longitudinal Perspective

Sat, September 6, 9:30 to 10:45am, Deree | Auditorium, Floor: 6, 6th Level Auditorium

Abstract

The prevalence of cyberdeviance and cyberpsychopathology is increasing globally, suggesting a potential causal relationship between the two. We conducted secondary data analysis of the Korean Youth Panel Survey (KYPS), which includes longitudinal data (2003–2008) from Korean adolescents aged 10–15 (N = 2,844). Using cross-lagged panel analysis, we examined whether gaming predicts later cyberdeviant behaviours. Results indicate that gaming significantly predicts online piracy, hacking, cyberbullying, and online pornography consumption. These findings suggest that intensive online gaming increases the risk of engaging in other cyberdeviant behaviours, highlighting the need for targeted interventions for at-risk individuals.
