In order to better understand the ways in which aging related decline is experienced in an incarcerated setting, we examine gender differences in age related decline. Prior research has demonstrated that the experience of incarceration is associated with accelerated aging, such that 55 in correctional setting may be comparable to 65 in the general population, when considering common aging ailments such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease (Aday, 2012; Duliise et al, 2022). Using data from the 2004 wave of the Survey of Prison Inmates, we examine the relationship between common age related illnesses and gender.
