Sat, September 6, 9:30 to 10:45am, Deree | Auditorium, Floor: 6, 6th Level Auditorium

Abstract

Digital media are an inseparable part of the lives of part of life - especially for young people. Digital media plays a major role in socialization and has a significant influence on personal development. Every day, people get to know and chat with each other via social networks such as Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok or dating platforms. As media usage increases, the risk of experiencing digital violence also rises.
Sexting, the sharing of sexual content or messages, is an increasingly prevalent phenomenon in the digital world that can have both positive and negative effects on those involved. However, it also opens opportunities for abuse, for example in the form of sextortion (blackmail through intimate content) or cyberbullying (digital harassment and bullying). The effects of digital violence can be massive.
The Center for Interdisciplinary Forensics at the University of Mainz (Germany) is addressing this issue and conducting a pilot study among students at the University of Mainz on the prevalence of being affected and perpetration. The aim of the online survey is to gain a better understanding of the digital usage behavior and experiences of the respondents. How is the prevalence rate of sexting, sextortion and cyberbullying in Germany? Is there still a need for clarification? The results should contribute to raising awareness of sextortion and cyberbullying and help to develop or modify prevention measures.
