Capturing Rehabilitation: Applying Photovoice Techniques with Young Offenders

Thu, September 4, 2:30 to 3:45pm, Communications Building (CN), CN 2116

Abstract

While numerous studies have delved into rehabilitation programs for young and adolescent offenders, this study stands out by introducing the novel photovoice research method to this population in Israel for the first time. The study, conducted at one of the Shoshan Rehabilitation Centers in the Prisoner Rehabilitation Authority, involved 14 young individuals aged 18-23 undergoing a rehabilitation program. These participants were tasked with capturing their surroundings within the rehabilitation center through photography. The findings, which underscore the yard as the most significant location, shed light on the yard's role in the rehabilitation process. The article further explores the implications of this finding, particularly how informal spaces can be harnessed to bolster rehabilitation objectives.
