P009. A systematic review on the theoretical foundations of honour-based violence

Thu, September 4, 6:45 to 8:00pm, Other Venues, Poster Venue

Abstract

This research presents the results of a systematic review carried out in two databases - Scopus and WoS - on literature published between 2016 and 2023 on the theoretical foundations of honour-related violence, comprising 40 articles. The results reveal the complex interaction between cultural traditions, religious parameters and patriarchal socialisation archetypes that legitimise this violence. Two types of theoretical approaches are identified: the culturalists, who conceive it as an expression of religious traditions and mandates, and those who consider it a manifestation of gender violence, as well as a serious attack on human rights that must be sanctioned. It is concluded that, even though the majority characterisation is that of gender-based violence, there is a consensus that the state response should not perpetuate the oppression of the women who suffer it, but should promote respect for forms of local resistance that foster their autonomy. Thus, in addition to criminalising honour crimes, preventive and culturally sensitive state responses should be formulated, focused on the protection of the victim as the protagonist.
