In 2023, during the General Assembly of the Police in Belgium, diversity was highlighted as a key theme in the future development of the police force. Although the topic is widely acknowledged within the police, only a limited number of local police forces seem to actively implement it through a formal diversity policy or plan (Demeyere, De Kimpe, et al. 2021).
A more in-depth study on diversity policies in six Brussels police districts examined how diversity is conceptualized and put into practice. This research adopts both a socio-anthropological and criminological perspective. Through participant observations, semi-structured interviews, and an inventory of existing diversity initiatives, the study maps out what is (and is not) currently present in terms of diversity within the police workforce, perspectives on diversity and inclusion, and concrete diversity initiatives.
By focusing on both positive dynamics and obstacles, this research aims to inspire policymakers, police institutions, and other stakeholders to develop a more coherent and sustainable approach to diversity and inclusion in policing. Ultimately, the study will outline desirable future scenarios and the pathways to achieve them. A key consideration is how a ‘diversity-sensitive’ police culture can contribute to more effective and fair policing in Brussels’ super-diverse urban reality.
