The number of transgender individuals in correctional institutions has been steadily increasing, yet little is known about the unique challenges they face within these settings. Research suggests that the criminogenic environment of prisons poses significant barriers to the well-being and safety of transgender people. The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) was introduced to protect vulnerable populations, but its implementation and effectiveness for transgender individuals remain under-explored. This study presents an updated systematic review of U.S. prison policies regarding transgender people, with a focus on PREA compliance. Implications for future research and policy for improving prison conditions and promoting wellbeing will be provided.
