Examining Variation in Policing Career Interest by Police Organization: Similarities and Differences Among Canadian Undergraduate Students

Thu, September 4, 8:00 to 9:15am, Communications Building (CN), CN 2113

Abstract

In Western Canada, an important consideration among aspiring police officers includes whether to join a municipal police organization or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. As part of the present research, we draw upon survey data from a sample of undergraduate students to explore organization-specific nuances among individuals interested in policing. Findings from early analyses reveal patterns of both similarities and differences regarding participants’ interests in different types of police organizations. In light of recent recruitment challenges experienced by police in the region, the findings may help police organizations understand what factors affect prospective applicants’ interests in different types of organizations.
