The presentation is talking about the causes and consequences of the underreporting victimization cases. Although the laws have been changed (after the Directive 2012/29/EU) giving more solid protection to the victims, with the related guarantees, still in Romania we can talk about the non-identification of the types of violence by victims, about gender stereotypes, about the fear of revenge ( because the criminal is a family member or close persons, etc.), about the victim who has low trust in the judicial system, starting with the police, the victim believes that the criminal behavior is insignificant and not worth reporting, about the victim contributed in some way to the victimization, being violent in turn, etc. In this regard we will also make a scoping review of the literature of the main factors impacting crime underreporting, beginning with Bandura`s theory.
Finally, the presentation refers to a victimization survey initially proposed to our students (2024), but which spread nationally, revealing interesting data about the motivation for not reporting victimizations and short term and long term consequences.
