South Africa’s Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) was established to ensure accountability and transparency in policing. Therefore, this study sought to establish levels of misconduct in the operations of the Directorate and ascertain the impact of these on its operational mandate. Drawing on institutional theory and theory of police legitimacy, this study was qualitative in nature, and it used in-depth interviews with key stakeholders and a review of relevant documents. Among the key findings is that political interference and corruption have resulted in the suppression of investigations and the manipulation of outcomes in favour of politically connected individuals. The study recommends the strengthening of the IPID's independence and autonomy, improving its capacity and resources, and promoting transparency and accountability in the policing system. Furthermore, the study highlights the need for concerted effort by all stakeholders to address the systemic corruption and political interference that continue to undermine the functioning of IPID.
