This study analyzes international research findings on the link between soccer games and domestic violence and reflects on their potential relevance in Portugal. A review of peer-reviewed studies was conducted using Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases. Eleven studies met the inclusion criteria, most originating from the United Kingdom and essentially relying on police data. Despite methodological variations, all studies consistently reported an increase in reported domestic violence incidents during soccer games. Considering that (1) soccer is deeply embedded in Portuguese culture, (2) domestic violence rates have remained persistently high, and (3) fan-related violence has been on the rise, this study discusses how these findings may resonate in Portugal. Building on this foundation, a forthcoming research project will analyze the connection between soccer games and domestic violence incidents in Lisbon during 2022 and 2023. The study will use regional-level data from domestic violence victim-support institutions to assess whether there are variations in domestic violence incidents during soccer match days. By reviewing existing research and outlining future research directions, this study highlights the importance of further empirical analysis to understand this complex issue. The findings will contribute to the development of targeted interventions and policies aimed at preventing domestic violence incidents.
