As part of the book project of the Balkan Criminology Group, Mapping the Penological Landscape of the Balkans: A Regional Study on Sentencing and Imprisonment with a Critical Analysis of Current Penal Policies, this presentation covers the findings of the chapter that provides an in-depth analysis of the Turkish prison system. It focuses on the complicated legal provisions, prison practices, current descriptive data and current challenges of the system. In particular, the presentation deals with the ongoing changes, which are complicated to monitor, aimed at reducing the workload of the judiciary and alleviating prison overcrowding. Institutional conditions are also discussed in the light of monitoring reports. The potential influence of criminology on the government's sanctions policy is also examined, as are problematic aspects of the system's attempts at rehabilitation.
