Police Social Interaction: Communication as a Tool to Prevent Radicalization

Thu, September 4, 5:30 to 6:45pm, Communications Building (CN), CN 3104

Abstract

Radicalization, which can lead to extremism and terrorism, is a significant security concern. Neumann (2010) notes that radicalization occurs even before any violent actions take place; therefore, social interaction and effective communication is essential for prevention. Community policing fosters connections between law enforcement and various community groups, addressing feelings of exclusion that can contribute to radicalization. By actively listening, police officers can gather crucial information and ensure individuals feel heard. Focusing on visibility and communication allows police to better understand the factors contributing to radicalization. By adhering to ethical practices and engaging in open dialogue, they can prevent radicalization, particularly at the local level. Community policing empowers officers and residents to identify early signs of marginalization, which helps limit the spread of extremist ideas. Open communication builds trust and fosters a sense of belonging within the community. It enables police to understand the needs and challenges of residents. Regular meetings and informal conversations encourage teamwork in problem-solving, making police active partners in ensuring safety. Training in cultural awareness and social issues enhances police-community connections. An empathetic approach and active listening help identify at-risk individuals and guide them to appropriate support, thereby preventing criminal behaviour and radicalization. Ultimately, communication serves as a powerful tool for prevention at the local level.
