Data innovations for illegal fishing

Thu, September 4, 8:00 to 9:15am, Communications Building (CN), CN 3103

Abstract

Data on illegal fishing, particularly of non-CITES protected species, are scarce. To better understand the nature and scale of this green crime, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime's Research and Trend Analysis Branch, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization, have been piloting a study involving web scraping and data extraction. This presentation shares the methodology used for the pilot, the limitations, and the potential this approach holds for research on other green crimes.
