Mental Health in Probation Services: Prevalence, Support, and Barriers

Fri, September 5, 5:00 to 6:15pm, Communications Building (CN), CN 3103

Abstract

Probation officers play a crucial role in the criminal justice system, yet research on their mental health remains limited compared to other frontline professions. This study examines the prevalence of mental health challenges among probation officers in the South Central region of the UK, explores the availability and effectiveness of support structures, and identifies barriers to seeking help. Using an anonymous online survey (N ≈ 284), this research collects self-reported mental health data, incorporating validated psychological measures (PHQ-9, WHO-5, ITQ) alongside qualitative insights. The mixed-methods approach combines statistical analysis of mental health indicators with thematic analysis of coping strategies and institutional support. Findings will contribute to understanding occupational stressors, emotional labour, and mental health interventions in probation work. By highlighting systemic challenges and potential policy reforms, this study aims to inform HMPPS well-being strategies and broader discussions on workforce mental health in criminal justice settings.
