This is the first of a two-part presentation where the authors critically reflect on some current concerns regarding the importance and limitations of ethical frameworks and codes of practice and their implementation. In particular they consider the following: the challenges posed by ‘mission creep’ whereby risk assessment slips into unduly prescriptive notions of what might be acceptable research methods; the challenge posed to professional autonomy and judgement by restrictive Codes of Ethics, and, the specific challenges posed to ethics by online research.
