EU-GBV data on violence against children

Fri, September 5, 2:00 to 3:15pm, Deree | Arts Center Building, Arts Center Deree 003

Abstract

The EU-GBV survey gathered data from women (aged 18-74) about violence experienced before they turned 15. This included questions about psychological violence (being belittled or humiliated) and physical violence by parents. The survey also asked about specific acts of sexual violence before age 15, committed by various perpetrators including family members, relatives, acquaintances, or strangers.
Results show that, across the EU, 13% of all women have experienced physical violence by their parents, while almost 30% said they experienced psychological violence.
Furthermore, 6.6% of women have experienced sexual violence during childhood, most perpetrators being male. Of these women, 55.7% have reported the violence to any person or official service, but the majority being to family and friends. Conversely, almost half of victims did not report or disclose what happened to them to anyone. Finally, almost 34% of women in the EU have witnessed violence between parents during childhood.
This presentation further examines the connections between different types of violence women experience and how surveys on violence against women provide a framework for collecting data on violence against children and its impact on children's lives in the EU.
