Gender based violence costs for society: estimates for some dimensions

Abstract

Gender based violence is a multifaceted plague of every human society, both for modern and for developing countries. It is a severe problem rooted in cultures, behaviours and stereotypes. It produces consequences directly on the victim’s life but also on relatives, friends and involving victims’ life world, on the society as a whole. Consequences for the victims refer to short and long term, direct and indirect effects on their lives, and involves many aspects of victims’ life: physic and psychological health, work sphere in term of losses of working days and productivity, losses in quality of leisure time, relationships. The present work aims to provide an estimate for the italian Country of health costs according to a statistical model combining information about specific injuries/diseases related to gender violence, the use of ambulance, first aid, hospitalization and data about the prevalence of gender based violence from various survey data. In addition, an estimation of justice costs related to gender based violence will be attempted.
