Session Submission Type: Roundtable
War criminology, as a distinct area of criminological inquiry, typically centres on war atrocities and the crimes of war, particularly those perpetrated by invading forces. While this focus is undeniably significant and sensitive, it constitutes only one aspect of the broader narrative of war. The experience of Ukraine during the Russian conflict that began in 2014, and the full-scale invasion of February 2022, has illuminated a crucial yet underexplored area: the functioning of the criminal justice system and society during wartime.
The war has not hindered academic research in Ukraine or collaboration with international partners. This roundtable discussion presents an opportunity to learn about three ongoing research projects, their preliminary findings, and insights from conducting criminological research in times of war.
This roundtable discussion draws on the following three projects to highlight various methodological and ethical issues encountered when conducting research in such a challenging environment: Dity Online: an ongoing Safeonline-funded project aimed at understanding the experiences, knowledge, and behaviours of Ukrainian children and their parents concerning the risk of online sexual abuse during the war (Dity means "children" in Ukrainian). RESONANT: Horizon Europe project, focuses on multidisciplinary research into information suppression and the targeting of diaspora communities by foreign information manipulation and interference. Its primary aim is to analyse and document the tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) used by both state and non-state actors in Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI), with particular emphasis on the Ukrainian context and Russian activities. Security and Trust Survey: An annual survey conducted since 2013 in eastern Ukraine, aimed at assessing the level of trust and legitimacy in Ukrainian law enforcement agencies, alongside identifying issues and local police expectations.
