Session Submission Type: Pre-arranged Panel
The rates of suicide, trauma-associated symptoms, psychological problems, substance abuse, and psychiatric disorders is recently increased among justice-involved individuals.
Furthermore, correction officers and professionals involved in the correctional context are more likely in developing burnout, anxiety and depression. These critical issues also affect the increased levels of distress and use of violence in correctional sections, both among justice-involved individuals and toward professionals.
This panel aims to explore the concept of violence as imposition and deprivation of psychological well-being, focusing on discomfort of both justice-involved individuals and those who work in the correctional context in order to reflect on possible alternatives to coercion and violence. These alternatives could improve mental health and promote communication among professionals.
