Session Submission Type: Roundtable
A decade ago, in an editorial on the future of European Criminology, David Smith (2014: 20), then Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Criminology argued that ‘European criminology needs to become both wider and deeper: wider in the range of countries, in the scope of the subject matter, in the borrowings from related fields such as the sociology of punishment, and in the research methods used; deeper through a close engagement between humanistic and scientific approaches.’ In this roundtable the 2025 European Journal of Criminology Editorial Team presents diverse perspectives on the breadth and depth of European Criminology today and its unique contributions to global knowledge about crime and criminal justice. Editors will introduce perspectives on European Criminology to encourage reflection and discussion, touching upon topics such as the scope and distinctiveness of European criminology, European Criminology from the perspective of a non-European Criminologist, European Penology (or Penologies), the impact of European penal and detention policies on European Criminology, and the politics of crime and justice in Europe.
