The persistent need to study war from a critical criminological perspective

Thu, September 4, 5:30 to 6:45pm, Deree | Arts Center Building, Arts Center Deree 002

Session Submission Type: Roundtable

Abstract

This roundtable gathers researchers to discuss the upcoming special issue of Criminological Encounters on ‘criminology and war’ at a crucial moment, amid ongoing global conflicts. The issue explores various facets of war, using different international conflicts as case studies, including resistance and anti-war activism, methods for recording civilian deaths in war, sexual violence during conflict, war and the life course, the role of AI in state violence, private actors in war, and the impact of war on refugee communities. In this round table most speakers will present their journal article submissions, which focus on Gaza/Israel. These pieces will serve as the foundation for an open discussion. The aim is not to assert criminology’s exclusivity in studying war, but rather, following Ruggiero’s (2023) argument, to emphasize once again the ongoing need for a critical criminological approach to intervene in war. This roundtable invites scholars and researchers to collectively focus on one of the most harmful state practices and forms of lawbreaking.
