Images in the journal História, Ciência, Saúde – Manguinhos (1994-2025): an overview of documentation and analysis.

English Abstract

The journal História, ciências, saúde – Manguinhos (History, Sciences and Health – Manguinhos) was launched in July 1994 by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ) at Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and deals with the health and life sciences from a historical perspective in the social, political, and cultural dimensions. From the magazine's earliest issues, the "images" section has aimed to publish texts based on images with a documentary function, but some articles are also analytical. In this communication, will be analyzed texts about images to understand the editorial policies and the documentary, patrimonial, or analytical character conferred upon images. The documentary corpus consists of digital archives of articles available on the Scielo platform, complemented by consultations of printed editions. The analysis will be made from the perspective of the cultural history, by the following parameters: authorship of the text and images, areas of knowledge, periodicity of publication of articles about images, graphic design of the journal, relationships between texts and images, typology of images (drawings, photographs, cartoons, engravings, etc.), presentation or description of images, theoretical and methodological frameworks. The results of the analyses allow to construct a multidimensional overview of the documentation and analysis of images in the field of the history of science in Brazil over the last 30 years.
