What Do Ten Thousand Dissertations Say about the Discipline?

• In Event: What is the History of Science? Part 2

English Abstract

The IsisCB contains 10,000 dissertations going back to about 1942, and we have been analyzing this data in conjunction with scholar's publication records, awards and prizes, and disciplinary service (society and journal leadership roles). In this paper we are tracking the development of the field in the United States and Canada since the beginning of professionalization in the discipline in the 1940s. We are exploring the network of scholars, institutions, and ideas that emerges from this data-centered study in order to tell a big picture story of our field as it developed over the decades.
