English Abstract

This panel examines contested, large-scale (planetary and cosmic) perspectives on Earth and the environment, including geological, literary, environmental, and philosophical issues. Individual papers address (1) indigenous technical knowledge employed by the native Mappila seafaring community of India; (2) tensions between cosmological and literary texts in the 16th-century Ottoman Empire; (3) contested theories and shifting methods regarding the nature of submarine canyons; and (4) satellites and the making of the nocturnal.
