Conflict, Communication, and Sport: Transcending the Bosnian Ethnic Divide

Sun, May 25, 13:30 to 14:45, Seattle Sheraton, Seneca

Abstract

Post conflict Bosnia aims to reconstruct infrastructure, economy and divided group relations. Croats, Serbs, and Bosnians are the nationalist groups clashing in the Balkans. The International Crisis Group contends the best outcome involves shared Bosnian, Croat and Serb identity. The sport of soccer, through Bosnia’s men’s national team and their World Cup qualification campaign, has the opportunity to create a shared Bosnia. Symbolic Convergence Theory is used in examining the narratives surrounding the World Cup qualification of Bosnia and effects on unity among national groups. Minimal research has been conducted on challenges facing unity among regional ethnic groups. The most pertinent issues consist of a lack of a stable and cohesive central government, economic deterioration, and divisive political entrenchment delineated along ethnic lines. These issues are beginning to be confronted through the Bosnian national team. We examine communicative and symbolic forces surrounding Bosnian ethnic relations, cultural identity, nationalism, and sport.
