A major issue with communication theory is the difficulty of finding contextually relevant research when developing a theory or project. Utilizing a sociotechnological approach, this paper articulates a need for a descriptive markup language to function as a notational system that can aid in the describing and finding of relevant works in the increasingly dense and technologically driven task of conducting communication research. A framework is described, including examples, of a notation system as well as the theoretical foundation for its need and potential use. The benefits are articulated and steps needed for implementation are outlined.
