Text mining is an established field of research closely related to communication. However, text mining is largely foreign to most scholars of communication in general and new media in particular. The current workshop aims to introduce the basic principles, techniques, and common tools for text mining with specific examples drawn from research on new media. The introduction will progress along the four main steps of text mining: data collection, data preprocessing, data analysis, and data visualization. Prior knowledge of computer programming, statistical analysis, or computer graphics is helpful but not required.
