Recent research on direct intergroup contact has repeatedly demonstrated a sedative effect. While contact improved outgroup attitudes, it decreased the motivation of members of historically disadvantaged groups to engage against social inequalities. Surveying South African students, we explore whether mediated contact can produce a similar pattern. Findings are discussed in terms of their implications for mediated intergroup contact as a model for social change.
