Orange Tuesday as Media Flag Event and Iconic Memory in the Empowerment of LGBT Liberation

Abstract

This essay attends to 1977's Orange Tuesday debacle, evidencing how the milieu emboldened the larger LGBT movement as a mediated flag event and later as an iconic memory from which to draw concomitant remembrance and community action. Orange Tuesday in Dade County, Florida provided a generative spark nationwide that resulted in consciousness-raising within LGBT communities. The case demonstrates how even in the face of external defeat, LGBT world-making can be stitched from the fabric of community animation.
