Crowdfunding and Independent Filmmaking in Puerto Rico: A Case Study

Abstract

This multiple case study examined the use of crowdfunding on Kickstarter as a strategy for partially or completely financing independent films in Puerto Rico. This qualitative investigation used a multiple case study methodology, employing techniques such as semi-structured interviews, analysis and triangulation of online data to assess the utility, potential, challenges and limitations of crowdfunding used in this particular context.

The results of the study indicated that its biggest advantage was that using crowdfunding for independent films in Puerto Rico betters the chances of raising funds quickly, without intermediaries, while ensuring a loyal fan base. Its main disadvantage was the level of difficulty in achieving the funds and the extra pressure placed on the filmmaker. Finally, the study concluded that crowdfunding partially financed three projects of independent cinema in Puerto Rico, but that it cannot be yet considered a viable strategy for fully funding independent Puerto Rican films.
