Over the last 10-20 years, media industry studies has emerged as a distinct academic
discipline within the field of communication. Several scholarly journals such as Media
Industries, the Journal of Media Business Studies and the International Journal on Media
Management highlight the growing significance of this important field of research. At
the last ICA conference, a number of academic colleagues and I discussed the possibility
of creating a Media Industry Studies interest group to highlight research on media
institutions and processes around the globe.
The new Media Industry Studies group would serve academics including media
economists, media management scholars and experts on the culture of media production.
Previously, relevant papers did not fit under one division or interest group, but rather
appeared unsystematically across a broad range of panels.
